Six evening sessions devoted to exploring the ins and outs of scriptwriting, for screenwriters who are just starting out and want to develop their craft.

 

Intro

Six introductory sessions devoted to exploring the ins and outs of scriptwriting. This programme is specifically geared towards those with little or no previous experience in the field. Topics covered in each session will inlude: General introduction; Generating ideas; Writing characters; Structure; Writing the script; Script workshop.
Priority is placed on putting a lot of the scary myths of screenwriting to rest and creating a context in which the participants can develop their own project over the duration of the course. To get the most from the class, students  should come along armed with a story idea they’d like to pursue.

 

Course Content

  • The basis of script formatting
  • Dramatic structure
  • Writing the individual scene
  • Connecting scenes
  • Dealing with writers block – are you over thinking it?
  • Making your scene visual – writing descriptions
  • What is genre?
  • Character development – writing credible characters and avoiding stereotypes.
  • Writing dialogue.
  • Why is comedy hard to get funny?
  • Selection of screenings relevant to individual projects

 

Tutor: Stephen Walsh

Stephen Walsh wrote the feature film How Harry Became A Tree, directed by Goran Paskaljevic, starring Colm Meaney, Kerry Condon and Cillian Murphy, and co-wrote Where the Sea Used to Be with the director Paul Farren. He scripted the documentary features Patrick Kavanagh – No Man’s Fool and John Ford: Dreaming The Quiet Man, both directed by Sé Merry Doyle. He has taught screenwriting and conducted script workshops at Trinity College, Griffith College and Filmbase.
