An introduction to all the main aspects of directing is combined with practical exercises in shooting to give an overview and experience of the basics.
Intro:
This course is a primer in directing. An introduction to all the main aspects of directing is combined with practical exercises in shooting to give an overview and experience of the basics – the practical knowledge you need in order to direct films. You will be guided through the process of preparation, taking in all the major departments that come together to make a film possible. In addition to practical exercises, all participants will shoot and crew short scenes.
Course Content:
During the course students will write and redraft a short scene. In week six, each student directs a small crew and cast, and shoots the scene on digital video using a Sony Z1.
- Introduction to the role and responsibilities of the director
- Introduction to crew roles
- Overview of technology and workflow.
- Script readings and dialogue analysis
- Storyboarding
- Translating the screenplay into visuals.
- Development of visual style with D.o.P and art director
- Understanding shot descriptions, framing and composition
- Directing actors
- Rehearsing and shooting
Tutor: Paul Farren
Paul Farren is a writer, director, editor. He has made several award funded shorts over the years. His feature debut ‘Where The Sea Used To Be’ has recently screened with Access Cinema. It won the Best First Time Feature Director award at the Amsterdam Film Festival.
He also works as a commercials director and has produced campaigns for Coca Cola Ireland, and Brandy dog food amongst others. Paul has a long history of making films with teenagers on the Screenagers programme and with other groups around the country.
